The Colombo Permanent Trial-at-Bar is set to deliver its verdict today (July 31) in the cases against former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara. Both are accused of failingto prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks, despite receiving sufficient intelligence warnings.
The Attorney General has indicted the two former officials on 855 charges, alleging that they criminally neglected their duties by failing to act on available intelligence, thereby allowing the attacks to occur. The charges relate to the deaths of 275 people and injuries sustained by nearly 500 others in the Easter Sunday bombings.
The verdict is expected to be delivered by the three-judge bench of the Colombo Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar on July 31.
